VI. Veronica
Wipes the Face of Jesus
Katherine Brimberry
Veronica
stepped forward to wipe Jesus's face and his image remained on the cloth,
her veil. Her name means "True Image" in Latin. Did Christ
intend that his physical human image be captured forever, or that his
"True Image" be found in ourselves and all others that we
encounter?
Veronica acted out of kindness and with boldness, stopping a death march
for a moment. Wiping Jesus's face didn't change the sentence, but her
touch, this small compassionate act, was a small mirror of the great
compassion that Jesus had for the world. In Matthew 25:38-40, Jesus
taught us to care for those who are sick, who are in prison, who are
hungry. "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
of mine, you did for me." Jesus's life as a paradox, both human
and divine, can never be completely captured as an image, but here I
present a human image and hundreds of names. Jesus says that he can
be found in each person we serve with compassion, and if we look to
everyone as Christ looked to each, we may in a small way mirror His
true image.
