Jonathan Richter's Inner World It started with the website. Perhaps you've seen it. Christendom's black sheep musical darlings -- the men and women of Squint Entertainment -- have one killer website called Squinterland that left me creatively floored and inspired all at once... The notable part of the website (besides its "I wish I had thought of that" interface design) was the illustrative talents of web guru/creative guy Jonathan Richter. The following one-man show highlights the range of his work -- from the simple gestalt of The Economist to a beautiful, crisp surrealistic style in the 'flying sign' illustration for the Squint site, that seems equal parts Rene Magritte, Berke Breathed and Monty Python. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Ted and Cecelia Richter, Jonathan and older brother Matt lived a normal existence. Richter states, "the only really significant event in my childhood worth noting is when my father switched professions from high school art teacher/potter to Lutheran minister. The effect of that was only positive, so all-in-all I had a nice childhood." After moving around to Missouri, Mississippi, and Florida, he ended up in art school in Los Angeles at Otis Parsons. During his last year there, as an illustration major, Richter animated a stop-motion music video for a song by Steve Taylor called Cash Cow. Out of school, he helped start a CD-ROM company called Sonic Boom which "turned out to be one of the gazillions of companies that tried to publish CD-ROM games in the wake of Myst but failed, " later working for RGA/LA as an art director doing another game and websites for Dockers, Levis, AT&T, and Energizer. Next, at Wataru corporation, he art directed some short CG movies for the Playstation title Tobal #2. He continues, "About a year and a half ago, Steve Taylor asked me to work with him in his new company, Squint. Working out of an industrial space in Los Angeles, I've animated music videos for The Insyderz and Chevelle, and launched the company website, Squinterland." Enjoy the inner workings of Richter's mind -- we certainly have.
