Artist's
Statement
San Miguel de Allende is a small town in central Mexico which has
become a popular tourist destination in recent years. This influx
of foreigners, many of which have become permanent residents, has
brought with it an enormous increase in commercialization. The original
residents of San Miguel, however, have retained a strong sense of
identity. This is evidenced in the unmitigated fervor of their continuing
succession of special events: from religious festivals to the running
of the bulls, from cockfights to bullfights, and from the celebration
of holidays to the celebrations of daily life. It is my hope that
this body of work will convey a sense of this people's enduring
character and the richness and depth of their traditions. It should
stand as a portrait of a people that remain welcoming, yet unchanged.
